Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour – CSU RECAP!

As the Galvanic crew rolled into Fort Collins, CO, for the fifth stop of the Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour, they were curious to see if the town would live up to its po-dunk reputation as described to them by the Boulderites from the last stop at CU. Disclaimer: the Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour loves country folk. Anyone interested in excessive lift kits, pastimes involving mud/firearms, shot-gunning beers, or the transformation of spare parts into custom vehicles is fine by us. Regardless of the crew’s feelings, the rumors about CSU were only partly true. The part that most people don’t know about Fort Collins is that the town is full of gnarly shreds.

In the summer the farm beans, in the winter they slay rails.

Resident shred-head and mustache connoisseur, Curtis Prince, heads back to the drop-in.

On Wednesdsay, March 25th, the Lory Student Center provided the backdrop for 60 of Colorado State’s most shredtastic co-eds to spin, swivel, and shralp to their hearts content on the three-feature setup. With emcee Chimpy T on the mic, the crowd was lead through three heats of skiers and snowboarders before going into the finals, where the best threw down in hopes of winning the cash prizes and awesome gear from Skullcandy, Omatic, Boone, and Spyder, as well as a cornucopia of other prizes from local sponsors.

This is Jess. See Jess win a snowboard. See Jess Smile.

Aside from the entertaining carnage and banger tricks, onlookers were kept busy with endless raffles and Cricket Wireless text-to-win giveaways. Skullcandy, utilized the crowd’s hot air with an inflatable beachball relay where the light-headed winner walked away with a killer set of headphones and a minor head rush.

Empty those lungs!

CRJT is dedicated to safety, duh.

The herd of male snowboarders included some big up-and-coming names who lived up to their reputation and dominated the field. New addition to the DC family, Andrew Brewer, came out to slide some metal and was rewarded with a third place finish after multiple 360’s out and solid 270’s on. Second place went to Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour veteran, Colin Spencer, for his switch front blunt 270’s on the handrail. Colin walked away with a brand new Omatic board and a big ol’ smile for his switch stunts. First place went to Omatic rider, Benny Hernreich, after throwing down a nollie back tail 270 on the handrail. Be sure to keep an eye out for Benny this year. He will be the one carrying around a huge bag of tricks.

As the skiers stepped up to the plate, the crowd got psyched for two-planker swagger and serious afterbang. Jeremy Brown took home third place and some fresh Spyder gear after unloading a mix of 270s, 450s, and switch-ups. Patrick Hughes scooped up second place and a sick pair of Boone skis after a solid showing on all three features. Pat’s main banger involved spinning 270 on the handrail, switching things up, and landing back regular, killer. Mr. Karl Fostvedt was the clear winner of the ski tribe after claiming insane 270s on, 450s off the box. Fostvedt walked away with some skrill, and the infamous jackalope trophy for his styley sliding.

Patrick Hughes’ color coordinated style gets him second place.

Fostvedt – On top

Last but certainly not least, the FoCo ladies made sure everyone knew that they could hang with the boys, and them some. Jessica “Loverface” and Amanda Poindexter are no strangers to the Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour, taking third and second place respectively. Landing in first was Randa Shahin, killing it after a 24-hour drive to compete. Part road warrior, part shred machine, Randa annihilated all three rails and made the 24-hour drive worth her while.

After the excitement, as the sun set over the CSU campus, the Galvanic Design crew strapped on their gnarly boots and tore down the setup as winds threatened to blow the rails off the scaffolding. Soon enough, the campus was transformed back into its natural state, and the crew was off again with the wind at their back. EPIC.

Be sure to check out the video for all the banger highlights, and come out to the next event at Gonzaga, in Spokane WA on April 2nd!

Campus Rail Jam Tour: Boulder CO

Boulder Colorado is like that kid the popular kid in high school who had it all; Captain of the football team, class valedictorian, boyfriend to the hottest chick in town, and all around Mr. Nice Guy. Boulder is truly the full package and ultimate college town for anyone stoked on snowboarding or skiing. Dubbed, “The city nestled between the mountains and reality” Boulder is just that; A mile-high city that revolves around college, partying, snowboarding, and well…some other stuff. So obviously, it was a no-brainer to make Boulder a stop in the 2009 Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour.

Boulder Freeride x Campus Rail Jam Tour. The perfect callabo.

Eric, Alex, and Ryan playing some metal

On Thursday, March 12th Galvanic Design teamed up with Boulder Freeride, the ski and snowboard club at CU, to host the raddest rail jam Boulder has ever seen. The intersection of 13th and College on “The Hill” was shut down to make room for the monster, 100ft long setup and the mob of usual shred suspects who came to watch the action.

Snowboarding is more fun in the streets

Local shred celebs Mike Casanova and Mark Moline came out to peep the scene and judge the snowboarders, along with Peter Olenick and Bobby Brown who put the pen to the paper to call the shots for the skiers. Event Organizers, Galvanic Design, had their hands full with over 150 hungry shredders applying to throw down for their chance at the $3000 cash purse. Needless the say, there were a lot of kids begging to ride and bribing registration staff members with everything from dreamcatchers to illegal substances. After whiddling down the field to 60 of the most savage riders in the area, the competition was under way and things got ferocious.

Hi, I’m going to drop now. Me too. Whatevs.

DJ Kid Couture and emcee Chimpy T kept the locals psyched with fiery beats and a barrage of free product. Consisting heavily of local snow enthusiasts, crazed groms, and the usual pseudo gypsies, the crowd packed in from all angles and stormed the rooftops to get a peak.

More bark than bite? Don’t think so.

As the sun set behind the flatirons, the lights flickered on and things turned serious as the finals got underway. Smiles remained large and vibes remained positive as always, but the tricks got a bit scary and the brutal dudes separated themselves from the pack with some technical wizardry.

All said and done, Emily Blewitt landed a third place spot on the women’s podium with stylie swivels on every rail. Kiwi shredder Charlotte Tundle stepped onto the second place spot with rock solid nosepress 180’s on the box and was rewarded with a brand new Omatic snowboard. Heading up the pack, Courtney Cox came out victorious and walked away with some cash, some killer Skullcandy headphones, and a big smile.

The ski field had some big names involved and to no one’s surprise, the finals were full of bangers. Judges liked Matt Walker’s 450’s and rewarded him with a third place spot and a full kit from Spyder. Local phenom and new addition to the Poor Boyz crew, Nick Martini, claimed second and some Boone skis with his 270 on to pretzel 630 out on the box. Finishing first, psyched as hell and smiling ear to ear, Andrew Hathaway walked away with $800 for his flawless switch-ups and all around killer style.

Nick Martini’s got swagger

The snowboard judges had their hands full with the 35 or so mens competitors. After some heavy deliberation and reviewing countless tricks, the judges awarded Nick Brewer with a third place spot on the podium. Nick is no stranger to the Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour, finishing in the top five every time he has competed. Ian Boll swooped the second place spot and a new Omatic snowboard after stomping solid tricks on every rail. Backlips, 360’s out, and boned-out blunts were just a few maneuvers in his heavy bag of tricks. Claiming first and makin’ that paper, Mr. Shaun Daley was the man of the hour, but then forgotten an hour or so into the afterparty. Just kidding Shaun. Keep an eye out for this kid. Shaun threw down some of the best tricks of the night, like a back 180 on the creeper bar. No big deal.

10% of $800 is $80. That’s how much Shaun Daley spent on kegs at the after party.

Now that the roads have been cleared and everyone has awaken from their post after-party comas, it’s time for the Galvanic Design crew to pack up and head to Fort Collins for the fifth stop of the tour at CSU. Only an hour north of Boulder, the crew hopes to be seeing some familiar faces and plenty of insane riding. Fort Collins knows how to throw down, so the event should be as wild as usual. See you there!

Utah Stop: Campus Rail Jam Tour

Everything you’ve heard about Utah is true. The beer is weak, missionaries roam the streets, and the locals all shred harder than you. Something about Salt Lake City helps breed gnarly riders. Maybe it’s the infamous Rail Gardens, maybe it’s the hydrating brew, or maybe even the good ol’ fashioned polygamy. Whatever it is, it’s working and it showed at the third stop of the Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour. The boys from Galvanic Design setup shop at the University of Utah on Wednesday February, 25th and were rewarded with the best riding the Tour has ever seen. All in all, 80 of Salt Lake’s finest came out to represent and slide some metal.

Emcee Chimpy T – Laying down the law

The U of U classrooms must have been empty during the event because the whole school seemed to be posted up on the Union lawn watching the madness. Local homies, Skullcandy and ZAGG were on-site throwing out product and spreading the love. Keep an eye out for the new Skullcandy x Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour collabo headphone! That “ish” is gonna be hot fire!

As the first heat got underway it was evident that these kids meant business. Forget about sloppy tricks or half-assed presses, the riding was all textbook and the style was on point. Four twenty-person heats gave riders a chance to have some fun and impress judges in hopes of landing a spot in the finals, and that’s just what they did. While the comp was fun to watch there’s no telling how stressful it must have been to judge. Utah riders really knew how to utilize the features and got super creative with a mix of pretzels, presses, pivots and more degrees of rotation than the judges could count.

Garrett thinks someone did a neat trick

Judging is so fun!

The riding was solid during the whole event, but as the finals kicked off things started getting silly. Local duder, Trent Sanders, showed up late, and tired from a rough night of partying but still managed to unload his arsenal of tricks and drop hammers on every rail. From his nose and tail press combos to his switch backside tailslides, the kid was annihilating everything. Judges agreed and rewarded his hungover shredding efforts with a first place spot and some cash money. Slayers, Brandon Hammid and Chris Vogt, were also dropping jaws and laying down some serious tech tricks in the finals. Brandon’s 270 on and off the down-flat-down, and handplants on the ZAGG pyramid got the crowd psyched and made the judges smile, landing him second place on the podium and a brand new Omatic snowboard. Chris Vogt rounded up the pack in third with a frontside 180 to switch backside 540 off the box.

Chris Vogt’s pants are about to fall off. No big deal.

Handplants in a rail jam? Brandon Hammid and ZAGG think so.

Trent Sanders – Makin’ that paper, SON!

As the ladies dropped in for the finals you could tell it was going to get wild. Madison Blackley was making the other girls sweat as she stomped her front blunt 270s on the handrail, owning first place. No big deal. Fellow lady ripper Erika Vikander held it down as well with powerful 5-0s on the handrail to claim second. Third on the podium was Gabby Maiden with a solid showing on all three features and a legit nosepress backside 180 on the “Tall Boy” box.

Erika Vikander was serious about her tailslides

Madison “Media Frenzy” Blackley

The SLC skiers are from another planet. They must be. Take third place finisher McRae Williams for example. McRae decided he should 450 off the kink, then off the box…first try. Leo Zoberski joined in the fun and stepped things up with a 270 on the down-flat-down before popping 450 out. Leo’s “spin-to-win” efforts landed him a fresh new pair of Boone skis and second place on the podium. However, no one could touch first place whizkid, Jeff Kiesel’s switch-ups and switch hits to 450’s on the down-flat-down. Jeff walked away with some serious beer money and a full kit from our friends at Spyder.

There’s a lot of rotation in there. McRae Williams – 450 out

Jeff Kiesel likes to ski switch

The first two events of the Campus Rail Jam Tour saw zero lady skiers. Salt Lake City was a different story. Catherine Warchal showed up, dropped in, and 450’d the crowd’s face off.

A big thanks goes out to the Garrett, Jake, and everyone from the One Love Ski and Snowboard Club , the U of U Union Programming Council , Cricket Wireless, and all the Tour partners for making it happen! It will be hard to top the level of talent that came to throw down in SLC!

With the third event of the Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour wrapped up, the Galvanic Design crew is stoked to head to the front range of Colorado for the next event at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Thursday, March 12th! Did we mention a $3000 cash purse??? Be sure to check the website at www.campusrailjamtour.com for more info!

Oxbow: Back to Powder

Manhattan Beach, CA (FEB 2009) – Oxbow has been rolling out with high performance outerwear for backcountry since1986. In its continuing support for the backcountry experience, Oxbow created a perfect outlet for the riders to take it back to the roots. Recently, the Oxbow Back To Powder event was an awesome breakthrough that exemplified the brand’s creativity and commitment to snowboarding and freeskiing. The event was held on Feb 1st -7th in the eco-friendly ski area of Arêches Beaufort, a place known by the best Backcountry riders in Europe.

With the help of pro snowboarder Christoph Weber (Austria) and pro freeskier Laurent Favre (France), Oxbow gathered some of the best riders from all over the world for a six-day contest.

“Since the beginning of the winter I helped to organize this special event together with Laurent Favre and Oxbow. We were all super motivated for a sick week of riding and good times on the mountains of Arêches Beaufort. All was well planed and the Riders list was promising. Not only really good athletes, but also Skiers and Snowboarders who share the spirit for the Mountain and the Sport. Unfortunately, the 2nd Oxbow Back To Powder didn’t see much powder this year, but it saw an action packed week with tons of smiling faces, Skiers and Snowboarders together, Freestylers and Freeriders together. I couldn’t ask for any better”, says Austrian pro snowboarder Christoph Weber.

In this competition the riders themselves were given free rein to create their own terrain that they then competed and judged each other’s performances on. There has however been no official winner this year. After the accident of one of the competitors, Oxbow decided to split the 15,000 € prize money into 16, which was warmly welcomed by all the riders. This gesture showed the amazing team spirit shared during the Oxbow Back To Powder 2009.

Oxbow’s long-standing presence in snow continues to be strengthened by event concepts like “Back To Powder” and backed by an amazing team of the some of the best freestyle and backcountry riders in Europe.
