009 Ultimate Boarder Stage 3: Skateboarding Qualifiers - April 11th, 2009 by REELcomp Team

The venue was brought inside one of the hangers at the Ventura County Fairgrounds because of the chance of rain over the weekend. New additions to the ramp include a bowl at one end and a 10’ halfpipe at the other end with the mini 6’ in between. Riders were stoked on the new ramps and the skating was proof of that. We saw ten heats of four or five people throughout the day and there was huge airs and technical lip tricks going down all over the place.

Omar Hassan was impressive on the snow and held his own in the water which gave him a 10th place overall coming into his strongest discipline. It was impressive to watch him ride the ramps and absolutely max out the potential of each feature. Other standouts included skating from Kristian Philipp, Chad Shetler, Aaron Astorga, Tosh Townend, Kurt Wastell, and young buck Birdhouse rider Adam Taylor. We’ll see all these guys in the finals today.

Check out Ultimate Boarders Production page for all the details.

2009 Ultimate Boarder STAGE 1-Snowboarding - April 6th, 2009 by REELcomp Team

This year marks the second annual Ultimate Boarder and brings with it, some new additions. New to UB are the “Team” collaborations where teams of 3 have selected specific athletes for each genre, snow, skate and surf. These teams are stacked with rippers like Bjorn Leines, Chris Bradshaw, Greg Bokencamp and Tyler Flanagan, holding it down for team Volcom, Val Surf, Hurley and Hosoi. The teams came out reppin’ hard and it was no wonder that we saw veteran snowboarder Bjorn Leines taking the top spot and wearing the Blue leader jersey for the Hosoi Team.

The Ultimate Boarder event is growing and so is the number of participants wanting to showcase their skills. Snowboarding Stage 1 was highlighted by the talents of Kurt Wastell, Shane Pospisil, Dave Downing, Chad Shetler, Todd Richards and last years UB champion, Aaron Astorga. The results from today have outlined exactly why this event is so great. The podium headed by Kurt Wastell puts him in the top spot with the most points and the leader jersey. Kurt is a strong surfer and an incredible skater. 2nd place went to Shane Pospisil who grew up surfing the tough waters of the East Coast and can skateboard quite well. The 3rd spot went to Chad Shetler, who’s strong point, believe it or not, isn’t snowboarding, but is in fact skateboarding. Chad is sitting pretty on a 3rd with his weakest event behind him and looking forward to the next couple event days. Stay tuned to REELcomp.com for the latest on the Ultimate Boarder.

Skateboarding’s Biggest Names and Rising Stars Compete for Largest Skateboarding Purse in History – Over $450,000 in Prize Money at the OC Fair July 10-12

The Maloof Money Cup, a three-day, five event competition and festival — hailed as the world’s greatest skateboarding competition — is back for a second year. The event, created by Joe Maloof, owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, returns to the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif. during the opening weekend of the OC Fair, July 10-12, 2009.

Sanctioned as the National Championship by World Cup Skateboarding, the Maloof Money Cup (MMC) — presented by industry vets, etnies and action sports staple Monster Energy— is the largest pursed event in the history of professional skateboarding with more than $450,000 in prize money.

New for 2009, SPoTlight Productions, based out of the walls of Skatepark of Tampa, has been tapped to run the World Industries Amateur Street and Vert Contest. The 2009 event will also feature an innovative new street course designed by some of the top names in the skateboard industry and extended broadcast coverage, 3 1/2 hours in original content, on NBC and MTV2.

“The Maloof Family is honored to be presenting the World Championship of Skateboarding again this year. We are particularly excited about all of our skaters and sponsors that helped make last year such a huge success and we look forward to seeing them all back again at the OC Fair this summer,” said Joe Maloof.

Highlighting the weekend’s events will be the Zoo York U.S. Pro Street Championship, which will feature a $100,000 first prize and the Carl’s Jr. U.S. Pro Vert Championship that will award $75,000 and a tricked-out SUV to the winner who exhibits the best “big air” and “off-the-wall” tricks. The U.S. Women’s Pro Street Championship will offer the largest first prize in women’s professional skateboarding with $25,000 going to the winner. The three-day event will also feature a 40,000 square-foot interactive festival village featuring action sport retailers and skateboarding activities.

The inaugural event featured 100 of the world’s best professional and amateur skateboarders and drew more than 20,000 attendees to watch the high energy competition. Nearly 200,000 people visited the festival village that featured action sports retailers and manufacturers, interactive games and skating skill activities for fans of all ages.
